Since Aristotle distinguished between energeia (actuality) and dynamis (potentiality), philosophers have sought a rigorous account of what it means for something to be possible. In the contemporary era, this quest reached its zenith in David Lewis’s modal realism, which posits that possible worlds are concrete realities no less genuine than our own. While Lewis’s framework provides a powerful semantic and metaphysical engine for modal logic, it incurs a massive ontological cost: the acceptance of an infinite plurality of causally isolated universes. The resulting debate, involving thinkers such as D. M. Armstrong and Kris McDaniel, centers on whether modal realism requires Lewisian concreteness or whether possibility can be grounded in actual structures. I argue that while Lewisian modal realism offers unmatched explanatory unity, his commitment to strict isolation and counterpart theory is an unnecessary burden. Alternatives such as McDaniel’s structured-world frameworks and Armstrong’s states-of-affairs ontology provide a more plausible realism by grounding possibility in actual structure rather than ontological excess, without collapsing into mere ersatzism.

Lewis’s modal realism begins with the principle that possible worlds are not abstract representations but concrete totalities. Our world is not metaphysically privileged; "actual" is an indexical term, analogous to "here" or "now." Consequently, modal claims are analyzed through quantification across this plurality: a proposition is possible if it holds in at least one world and necessary if it holds in all (Lewis 2). This achieves extraordinary explanatory success, providing a concrete interpretation of modal logic and counterfactuals. However, this success requires a "reductive" program that replaces trans-world identity with counterpart theory. Because worlds are strictly isolated, individuals cannot exist in multiple worlds; rather, there exists a counterpart who resembles the original (Lewis 194). This move preserves modal isolation but strikes many as a violation of ordinary modal intuition, as it effectively suggests that when I say, "I could have become a musician," I am speaking of someone else entirely.

Kris McDaniel’s Modal Realisms emerges as a critical intervention, arguing that the features of Lewis’s system are not essential to the realist project itself. McDaniel argues that Lewis’s commitments—world-bound individuals, strict isolation, and counterpart theory—are a choice, not a necessity. By exploring models where objects may literally overlap across worlds, McDaniel restores a more intuitive understanding of trans-world identity. As McDaniel notes, if we permit overlap, we move closer to ordinary linguistic practice, where we genuinely refer to the same individual across modal scenarios (McDaniel 134). However, this flexibility creates a new problem: if objects can exist in multiple worlds, the boundaries of those worlds lose the absolute ontological independence that Lewis relied upon to maintain his system’s elegance.

This tension between Lewis’s unity and McDaniel’s plausibility points toward an alternative tradition represented by D. M. Armstrong. Armstrong’s ontology prioritizes actual existence, positing that reality consists of particulars instantiating universals, with states of affairs serving as the truthmakers for our modal claims (Armstrong 115). For Armstrong, possible worlds are not concrete universes but maximal combinations of states of affairs governed by combinatorial principles. This approach grounds possibility in the structure of actual reality rather than in a distant plurality. The distinction between Lewis and Armstrong is thus a fundamental methodological schism: Lewis seeks to explain possibility through ontological expansion, whereas Armstrong and McDaniel seek to explain it through structural analysis.

Critics of structured-world ontologies often argue that if worlds are not concrete universes, they must be mere abstract representations, thus collapsing realism into a form of ersatzism. This objection rests on a category mistake: it equates "reality" with "spatiotemporal concreteness." Structured worlds are not merely symbolic maps; they are constitutive grounds. They function as the territory of possibility itself, grounding modal truths and constraining counterfactual reasoning through their internal relations. Nothing in the definition of realism requires that all real entities resemble ordinary physical objects. Therefore, structured-world frameworks preserve the realist commitment to non-actual entities without demanding an infinite plurality of universes.

Ultimately, the choice between Lewis and the structured-realist tradition reflects a deeper philosophical divide. Lewis prioritizes systematic explanatory power at the cost of ontological extravagance, famously responding to the "incredulous stare" of his critics by insisting that theory determines ontology (Lewis 133). In contrast, structured-realist frameworks like those of Armstrong and McDaniel prioritize metaphysical plausibility and ontological discipline, following the medieval dictum that entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem (entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity). While Lewis remains the more unified architect, McDaniel and Armstrong prove the more plausible metaphysicians. A successful realism must bridge this gap, grounding the reality of possibility in genuine structures rather than in the baroque proliferation of entities. The challenge remains to explain how possibility can be understood without multiplying being beyond the requirements of explanation.

The traditional ambition of the discipline has been to discover the fundamental structure of reality: to identify what exists, how it exists, and what relations obtain among existing things. Yet over the last several decades, a growing number of philosophers have questioned whether many metaphysical disputes genuinely concern reality at all. Perhaps disagreements about objects, properties, constitution, and modality are not discoveries about the world but reflections of conceptual frameworks, linguistic conventions, or competing explanatory interests. The result is a deep divide between metaphysical realism and meta-ontological deflationism.

This divide is exemplified by four influential thinkers. D. M. Armstrong represents a truthmaker realism according to which metaphysics discovers the states of affairs that ground truth. David Lewis advances an even more ambitious realism, arguing that explanatory adequacy may require commitment to an infinite plurality of concrete possible worlds. Against them stand Amie Thomasson and, to a lesser extent, Lynne Rudder Baker. Thomasson argues that many ontological disputes are resolved not by metaphysical investigation but by understanding the application conditions of our concepts. Baker, while retaining substantial ontological commitments, seeks to explain objects through relations of constitution rather than through reduction to fundamental particles or substances.

These philosophers disagree not merely about statues, persons, possible worlds, or truthmakers. More fundamentally, they disagree about what metaphysics itself is supposed to accomplish. Is metaphysics an empirical-rational inquiry into the architecture of reality, or is it a conceptual discipline that clarifies the frameworks through which reality is described? I argue that neither pure realism nor pure deflationism offers a satisfactory answer. Lewis and Armstrong demonstrate that metaphysics requires genuine explanatory commitments, but they often pay for explanatory power through ontological inflation. Thomasson correctly exposes the conceptual presuppositions underlying many metaphysical disputes, yet her deflationary approach threatens to collapse ontology into conceptual analysis. The most plausible path forward is a form of Disciplined Realism: a metaphysics that employs conceptual clarification to eliminate pseudo-problems while preserving a commitment to truthmakers and explanatory structures genuinely required by reality.

The tension between realism and deflationism is perhaps most vividly illustrated by the problem of material coincidence. Consider the familiar example of a sculptor shaping a lump of clay into a statue. Prior to sculpting, there exists only the lump of clay. After sculpting, there appears to exist both a lump of clay and a statue. The two occupy precisely the same spatial region and share all microphysical constituents. Yet common intuition suggests they are not identical: the lump could survive being flattened, whereas the statue could not.

For Baker, the answer lies in the constitution relation. The statue is constituted by the lump of clay without being identical to it (Baker 31). Constitution is a relation of ontological dependence in which one object provides the material basis for another while the constituted object possesses its own distinctive identity conditions. Baker's account preserves common-sense intuitions about artifacts and persons, but it invites ontological inflation. If a statue and a lump coexist, what prevents an indefinite proliferation of coincident objects?

This demand motivates Thomasson's critique. According to Thomasson, many ontological disputes arise because philosophers misunderstand the nature of existence questions. Rather than asking what exists, philosophers often ask whether a given concept is appropriately applied under certain conditions. For Thomasson, the question "Does the statue exist?" is not a deep metaphysical mystery; once we accept that there is appropriately arranged clay satisfying the conditions for the application of the term "statue," the existence claim follows trivially (Thomasson 35). This represents a radical challenge to traditional metaphysics, as it frequently transforms ontological disputes into questions concerning conceptual competence.

However, conceptual analysis alone appears insufficient to satisfy the explanatory ambitions of metaphysics. Armstrong's truthmaker theory illustrates this challenge. For Armstrong, truths require ontological grounds; a proposition is true because something in reality makes it true (Armstrong 115). Armstrong refuses to treat truth as a purely linguistic phenomenon, insisting that language succeeds because reality possesses structures that correspond to our assertions. Thomasson's approach risks reversing the order of explanation, treating the world as a secondary derivation from our conceptual rules.

David Lewis represents the opposite pole of metaphysical realism. Lewis’s modal realism emerges from a commitment to systematic explanatory unification, where possibility, necessity, and counterfactuals are analyzed through quantification over an infinite plurality of concrete possible worlds (Lewis 2). The elegance of this framework is extraordinary, but the ontological cost is equally extraordinary. Lewis justifies this by arguing that theoretical utility outweighs ontological discomfort, yet modal realism illustrates the danger inherent in unconstrained metaphysical realism: explanation becomes detached from ontological restraint (Lewis 4).

The deepest source of disagreement among Thomasson, Baker, Armstrong, and Lewis is their conception of successful explanation. For Thomasson, explanation consists in clarifying conceptual frameworks; for Baker, it consists in identifying relations of constitution; for Armstrong, it requires truthmakers; and for Lewis, it consists in constructing the most theoretically powerful system. These differing standards generate distinct metaphysical landscapes, revealing that philosophers often appear to disagree about reality when they are actually disagreeing about explanatory norms.

The most promising alternative is a form of Disciplined Realism. Such a framework incorporates the insights of both traditions while avoiding their excesses. It utilizes conceptual clarity to prune the metaphysical landscape of pseudo-problems, but it remains committed to a core ontology of truthmakers and structural relations that explain the world without inflating it beyond necessity. The task of contemporary ontology is to identify the structures genuinely required to explain reality while remaining critically aware of the conceptual tools through which those explanations are formulated. The explanatory limit of metaphysics is reached when theory outruns necessity; beyond that point lies either the empty formalism of deflationism or the uncontrolled proliferation of realism.
